Why should we target fall themed words in speech therapy?

Your students will be introduced to these words in their classroom, as well as outside the classroom.  So, we need to help students recognize, label and describe these pictures / words because learning new vocabulary is essential for good communication. (HINT: If your students speak a foreign language, Canva also has a language translation app option that makes personalizing these printable worksheets).

Additionally, our kiddos with language difficulties take more time to learn new words because it’s not just about memorization.  The students need to be able to:

  • Relate words together
  • Store them into memory in a meaningful way
  • Be able to use these words in conversations with their friends and teachers.

Therefore, the more times a student is exposed to a word in different activities, the more they can retain and recall the words at a later date. You can get these free fall worksheets in Canva to have tons of educational activities for some fall fun this autumn season. Here are just some of the ways you can use the free fall activity worksheets you’ll find in Canva.

1. Editable Fall Vocab Poster for your speech room

This poster has 12 fall words listed and will be the perfect addition to your classroom.  You can change out the pictures and use the word lists you want to target most.  Here are some ways you can use this fall poster to help the learning process.

  • If you like using books in therapy, swap out the pictures in this poster and replace them with pictures of items from the book.  (This is perfect for first graders!)
  • One of my favorite books to use in therapy is “There was an Old Lady who Swallowed Some Leaves.” You can choose to target vocabulary words from the book.  In the book, the Old Lady swallows a shirt, pumpkin, pole, rope, fall leaves and pants.  You can easily swap out the pictures in this poster to include pictures of the items she swallowed.  Place the pictures in order to help your younger students sequence and retell the events from the story. Or, you can place the pictures out of order and your students will have to tell you the correct order. You can do this for any book that you are targeting in your speech session.
  • Another great way to use this fall words poster is to print it out on an 8.5×11 sheet and make it a visual that your students can reference when they are working on vocabulary.

2. Fall Vocabulary Activity Sheet: Fall Bingo Printable

Colorful free fall bingo calling cards

Here's a fun activity you can try with your students year. This fall themed bingo game board comes with five different bingo playing cards, as well as calling cards.  Play this game as a fun way to introduce your students to the autumn vocabulary words.  Tell the students the clues and have them race to be the first one to find the word on their card.  This would even be perfect for preschool children. Here are some ideas on how to use the bingo game:

  • Download and print this collection of printable fall worksheets that are perfect for classroom use.
  • Then, laminate the boards and cards for durability. The students can mark off the words on their cards by using dry erase markers.
  • The students can use bingo chips, dot markers, magnetic chips, colorful leaves, or fall shaped erasers.
  • Grab the free printable pack of fall bingo cards here.

3. Fall Theme Worksheets: List of Autumn Words Flashcards

This fall activity worksheet comes in fall colors, as well as black and white!  This template includes so many more fall vocabulary words that you can print out and laminate for your speech room. Edit the word lists template in Canva, download as a printable pdf, then print them out! When printing out these cards, make sure you set the printer to “Fit to printable area”. These flashcards are perfect for younger children in second grade but can also work for older students and other grade levels..

Here are some of the ways you can use these flashcards for Response to Intervention:

  • Print the flash cards out and give them to your students’ teachers.  The students can practice these words associated with autumn during their morning centers or during free time.
  • Use these fall flashcards to assess your students' naming vocabulary. In Canva, you can edit the flashcards and remove the words from the cards.  Then, you can show the cards to your students and assess if they are able to label the words.  These cards can also be used as a post-teaching assessment to measure their progress.
  • They are small and compact and are easily carried in small storage containers.  These are my favorite carrying cases.  You can put multiple sets of flashcards into the storage containers, then you carry them with you.

  • Have your students make up a story with the cards. Place the cards face up on the table and have each student pick up a card.  Then, the students take turns using their words to tell a story.  They can make their story funny or silly.  For added fantastic fun, don’t tell them the directions until AFTER they have picked up the card.
  • Sensory Bins! Grab your favorite sensory bin and throw the cards in the bin. Name a card and have your students go on a “word hunt”.  Some of the items you can put in the sensory bin for fall include: autumn leaves (fake or real), acorns, fall erasers, miniature objects, or mini pumpkins. The Dollar Tree has tons of great items that you can include in the bin.  Want more ideas? 4. Fall Activities: Fall Memory Match

These cute memory match cards are a fun way to practice the words your students have learned.  Each card pictures an acorn with the targeted word and picture inside of it.  There are so many different ways you can use this activity with your students. When printing this game, make sure you set your printer to print on both sides of the paper.  That way, the other students won’t be able to see the other side of the card.

Here are some ways you can use this fun fall vocabulary activity:

Fall memory match game! Great for small groups.
  • Play the game as a memory game with your first grade students!  There are instructions in the template on how to do that.  Check them out here.
  • Don’t have the Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game?  You can print out a picture of a large squirrel, cut out the mouth and then have the students “feed the squirrel”.
  • Hide the cards around the room, then tell your students they are sneaky squirrels who have lost their acorns!  Send them on an acorn hunt to find all the missing acorns. If you have a large group, send them 1 at a time to look for the acorns. You can help the “little squirrels” by giving them directions using prepositions (“I think there is an acorn under the desk” or “There might be an acorn next to something we can read”).
  • There are so many ways you can target multiple goals with this activity. This game is perfect for your preschool population, but older students will enjoy using these cards as well.

5. Fall Activity Worksheets: Fall Describing Words Game

Free Printables Fall Describing Game

Have you ever played the game Taboo during your speech therapy sess?  This game is very similar and can really help your students who have difficulty describing and defining words. Instructions are included on the last page of the template, but I recommend printing these cards with the patterned background on the back to deter any sneaky game peekers.

Here are some ways you can differentiate this fall activity:

  • Use the EET to help your students describe each of the words on the card.  The students can describe the pictured object by telling their classmates what the category is, what it looks like, or what you do with it, but… However, they can’t say the name of the item, or their turn is over!  (This might take a few tries before they get the hang of it.  Many of my kiddos will shout out the answer to their friends right away: “It’s a costume!”)
  • Use more cueing for younger students, or edit the template and remove one of the forbidden words.
  • For older students, add a word (or two) to the card before printing, so that students really have to think about how they describe the object.  You can even give the students 2 or 3 cards at a time so they have time to think about how they will describe the object.

Bonus Fall Activity: Fall Worksheet Kindergarten

Fall Kindergarten Worksheets
Fall Kindergarten Worksheets for the SLP

Here is another bonus fall activity worksheet that is easy to use and low prep. This sorting activity has 15 pictured objects that belong to either the season of autumn or spring.. Your students will have to decide if the object belongs to the spring or fall category. Then, they have to glue the object into the appropriate box. This seasonal worksheet is the perfect way to engage young learners.

SLP Tip: Cut out the pictures ahead of time, or have your students cut the pictures while they talk about the fall words.  If they need some help afterward, you can give them a starter sentence to tell you where the pictures belong: “The ____ belongs in the fall because… “ or “In the fall, we see…” This is perfect for morning work or for early finishers.

Recommended Tools

My favorite tool to use when making my own materials is this all-in-one laminator, paper trimmer, and corner rounder. This tool makes it so easy to laminate, cut and soften the edges of your materials. And it is so compact! No more clunky laminators and having to cut materials with scissors (which takes forever!). You can print, laminate and cut your materials in minutes!
