Canva Q&A: Your Top 5 Questions Finally Answered Here

1. What is Canva
Canva is a web-based graphic design tool that allows anyone to create visual resources for any purpose (presentations, posters, social media, comics, worksheets, and more)!
They offer a wide range of templates, graphics, and tools that make it easy for users to create professional-looking resources without needing advanced design skills.
It’s as easy as drag and drop, and you can create professional-looking activities in just a few minutes.

2. Is Canva Really Free
Yes, Canva offers a free plan with access to a wide range of templates, images, and design elements.
There is also a paid subscription option called Canva Pro, which offers additional features and resources for professional designers.
However, teachers and other educators can take advantage of Canva for Education, which gives them an upgraded version for free!
3. Who Created Canva
Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht, and Cameron Adams founded the company in 2012 in Sydney, Australia, and it has become a popular graphic design platform with millions of users around the world.
4. Can Canva remove background
Yes, with just a few clicks, you can remove a background from a photo or video, and it works really well!
To remove the background, follow these steps:
- Firstly, upload your image or video by clicking on the “Uploads” tab in the top menu and selecting the “Upload an image” option.
- Once your image is uploaded, click on the image to select it and click on the “Edit” button in the top menu.
- Then, click on the “Remove Background” button in the image editor to launch the background removal tool.
- The tool detects the background from the main image and removes it. But you can also manually adjust the photo or video using the brush tool.
- When you are finished, click the “Apply” button to remove the background from your image, and you are done!

5. Can Canva be used for commercial use
Short answer: Depends…
You can use Canva commercially if you have a Free or Pro account. However, you cannot use an Education account to create designs for sale.
Here's what the company says: Content licenses and using Canva for commercial purposes.
Here are some helpful guidelines:
- Firstly, always start creating your resources from a blank template.
- Never use an existing template from the library. The templates are copyrighted works and belong to the original designer. They do not belong to Canva.
- You cannot sell any of the free images you find in Canva. They have to be used in a design.
How can you share your resources? That depends on whether you’re using Pro images or free images. Here is how to share your resources:
- Pro images: If your resource includes Pro images, you can only share your work as a template link.
- Free images: If your resource includes free images, you can share your work as a template link, PDF, PNG, or JPEG.
Are Canva Designs Copyrighted?
Yes! Canva templates are copyrighted works, so you can’t resell or redistribute them. However, within the licensing terms, you can use the designs you create from scratch for personal or commercial purposes.
Bonus question: Is Canva for Education Free
Canva for Education is a free version for educational settings. It includes all of the features of the basic version, as well as all of the Pro features, such as:
- Access to all elements and templates
- Unlimited folders
- Audio tracks
- Magic resize tool
- Background remover for videos and photos
- Google Classroom integration
