AI is changing the field of speech therapy, especially how we assess, diagnose, and treat speech-language disorders.

A bulletin board displays a handwritten list titled "AI for Speech Pathologists". It includes personalized lessons, lesson plans, data analysis, and creating materials like worksheets and presentations. The bottom text asks, "How can we use ChatGPT in speech-language therapy?

Moreover, AI can help you write assessments, create treatment plans, conduct research, generate therapy materials, and more with just a few clicks.

Additionally, AI can answer questions about students’ speech disorders and development.

This makes it a useful tool for both therapists and graduate clinicians.

AI for Better Speech Therapy

The integration of AI in speech-language pathology offers many benefits and helps speech-language pathologists diagnose, treat, and monitor speech and language disorders.

Here are some key advantages of using speech therapy AI in your daily work:

Efficiency

AI can handle time-consuming tasks like creating lesson plans, writing reports, and tracking your students' progress.

The image features a gradient background transitioning from blue to pink with the title "Why Should We Use AI in Therapy?" and six checkmarked points: Efficiency, Personalization, Research, Gamification, Data-driven results, and Help graduate students. Speech therapy AI is revolutionizing the field.

This lets you to spend more time directly working with students while providing more personalized and direct interventions.

You can even reduce your average caseloads and increase efficiency by leveraging AI research.

You can even ask AI how to work on a multidisciplinary team (e.g., occupational therapists, case managers, etc.) to effectively help your students with language impairments in the classroom.

Personalization

AI can customize activities and exercises to meet each students' needs, adapting to your students’ progress and responses.

AI can even be used to personalize therapy activities to a student’s favorite cartoon or superhero.

When students are engaged, you’ll get more effective therapy sessions!

Plus, if you use Canva to create your materials, you can easily personalize your resources in seconds!

Data-Driven Therapy

AI helps analyze data from therapy sessions and can provide insights into what works and what needs adjustment. This allows you to constantly improve your therapy methods and help students reach their goals faster.

By analyzing data from previous sessions, AI can adjust the difficulty and type of exercises to match the student’s needs and communication skills. This personalized approach is so important for addressing language problems and improving language abilities.

AI can also highlight patterns in speech errors and suggest targeted interventions based on empirical evidence. As a result, this data-driven approach supports session planning and helps tailor therapy to each child's vocabulary and learning needs.

Text Generation Tools for Speech Therapy

Various text-generation tools can help speech pathologists create engaging content and therapy materials.

The best way to assess each text-generation tool is to provide it with the same question and then analyze the output you receive.  Compare the responses from each tool for accuracy and see which one works best for you.

My favorite is ChatGPT, but you can decide which text-generation tool you like best.

Here are just some of the text-generation tools you can try:

Informational image titled "AI Chatbots" explaining the use of different speech therapy AI chatbots. Below the text are icons and names of four chatbots: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude.ai, and Copilot. The Speech therapist logo is in the corner.

Becoming a Speech Therapy Prompt Engineer

If you want to get the best results from AI tools, you need to give them clear and specific instructions.

Therefore, SLPs skilled in AI prompt development will see even greater benefits from using generative AI tools. With this knowledge, speech pathologists create prompts tailored to their students' specific needs.

Prompting the Text Generator to Sound like an SLP

That’s why it’s so important that each prompt you give AI has the following:

  1. Role or Audience:  Specify who you are and intended audience or population.
  2. Specific Need or Goal: State your specific need or goal.
  3. Desired Output or Response Type: What kind of response and output do you want from AI?  Use bullet points and be specific.
  4. Tone and Style: Set the tone and style of the output, such as casual, professional, humorous, friendly, etc.
  5. Examples:  Provide an example that lets the chatbot know exactly what you are looking for.

Example Prompt

When you use this framework, you'll get exactly the results you want. Here is a sample prompt you can try.

(1) You are a speech pathologist who works with students who are 8 to 10 years old and have speech and language disorders. (2) I need ideas for fall-themed activities to use in my language therapy sessions. Please brainstorm activities that fit this criteria:

(3) Provide 10 fall-themed activities that are fun and engaging. These activities should target the following goals: vocabulary and sequencing. Ensure the activities you list use only basic supplies found in a school or nature (i.e., construction paper, acorns, leaves, etc.).

(4) The tone should be informative and casual.

(5) Here is an example of an activity I like to use to target vocabulary skills in the fall. I use a fall bingo board with fall-related vocabulary. The students listen to a short riddle and then have to guess the correct fall word.

How Can AI Be Used in Speech Therapy?

AI is changing how speech pathologists make efficient, personalized, and data-driven decisions. Here’s how AI can help:

Personalized Lesson Plans

AI tools can create customized lesson plans for your language services.  You can tell the chatbot exactly what you want in the lesson plan, such as an objective/goal, materials, an introduction to the lesson, and post-session assessments.

A woman with long brown hair, wearing a green sweater, is looking up thoughtfully and touching her chin. A speech bubble next to her head reads, "HOW CAN AI BE USED IN SPEECH THERAPY?"

Tell the chatbot about your students:

What are their likes and dislikes?

What are they capable of doing?

This ensures that your therapy sessions include ability-based interventions.

By using AI, you can meet your students’ needs and improve educational outcomes.

Gamification with AI

Use AI suggestions to use the power of gamification to keep students motivated and engaged throughout the therapy process.

gamification with AI

In addition, AI can suggest ways of incorporating games into therapy sessions.

Do you have a favorite game you like to play with your students (e.g., Candyland, Guess Who?).

You can ask the chatbot for ideas on how to incorporate specific games into your session.

You can also use AI and Canva combined to get gaming!

AI for Emotional Regulation and Behavior

Do your students have difficulty with emotional regulation or with understanding emotions?

Them, you can ask AI to come up with a plan to help your students develop their emotional intelligence and improve their coping mechanisms. If you have a specific problem that continues to occur in your speech room, then ask AI for advice!

For example, you can even ask the chatbot for a system that you can implement to target specific situations that continue to occur in your speech room.  For example, you can ask the chatbot for advice on how to handle students who keep calling out when it’s not their turn.

Data Analysis with AI

AI can help you analyze your data so you can write progress reports.

I personally love using the SLPToolkit to track all my data.

AI for speech pathologists

Firstly, I run a report in SLPToolkit that details all the notes from my therapy sessions.

Then, I cut and paste this information into ChatGPT (minus all the personal information!).

After that, I ask the chatbot to analyze my students' progress over time and write a summary based on my notes.

While I still need to read through the output to check for accuracy, the results I got were amazing!

Finally, you can then ask the chatbot to create real-time strategies to provide appropriate interventions.

Efficient Evaluations

AI can help generate detailed evaluation reports quickly and accurately, allowing therapists to spend more time on therapy and less time on paperwork.

As mentioned previously, you can cut and paste any detailed notes from your therapy sessions to include in your evaluation report.

Help for Graduate Students

Graduate students studying speech-language pathology can even benefit from these tools as they streamline their workload and improve learning outcomes.

Speech therapy AI

While trained speech pathologists with hands-on experience should use these AI tools, these chatbots are helpful to graduate students as well.

For example, graduate students can use chatbots to create lesson plans, get ideas, and even get advice on how to talk to their students' parents.

SMART Goals

AI can help you set SpecificMeasurableAchievableRelevant, and Time-bound goals, making tracking and achieving progress easier.

If you're unsure what a SMART goal is, ask the chatbot to tell you more information about them.  Or head to TPT and get my free resource!

Then, if you want to make a specific goal into a SMART goal, ask the chatbot to do that!  Just give it an idea of the kind of goal you want to create and see what it comes up with.

Can AI Do Speech Therapy?

AI cannot fully replace human speech-language pathologists, but it can really help improve your work by providing resources and tools we never had before.

ai for speech therapy

With AI, you get a vault of new speech and language tools that were otherwise unavailable.

However, AI shouldn't replace speech therapists. Instead, it's a tool that can help them work more efficiently and effectively.

Morever, AI will never have the clinical expertise and empathy needed to help students.

Will Speech Pathology Be Replaced by AI?

Probably not! AI will assist speech pathologists in making decisions by analyzing data and providing concise recommendations, but it will never replace the complex decision-making processes and emotional support that SLPs provide.

While AI offers numerous benefits, there are important limitations to consider:

will AI replace speech pathologists

Human Touch and Nuance

AI lacks the human touch and understanding that we provide.

Complex cases and providing emotional support are areas where human therapists excel, and AI cannot fully replace them.

This would make it difficult for AI to work with young children.

Data Privacy and Security

Ensuring the privacy and security of sensitive student data is important for maintaining compliance with legal standards. When asking the AI chatbot about a specific student, use first names only.

Again, do not use personal information, as the chatbot could use it in future sessions.

Ethical Concerns

AI in healthcare raises ethical concerns regarding potential bias in AI algorithms and the need for ongoing human oversight. Check the information you receive from the chatbots. Always confirm the AI did not form a bias and that the information is correct.

The Future of Speech Therapy AI

As AI technology continues to evolve, its applications in speech therapy will likely expand.  What do you think AI will have in store for us?  Here are my thoughts about future advancements.

the future of speech therapy AI
  • Automatic Speech Recognition: Improved accuracy in recognizing and interpreting speech patterns, even with varied accents and speech impairments.
  • Virtual Reality (VR) Integration: Combining AI with VR to create immersive therapy environments that can simulate real-life scenarios for students to practice their speech and language skills.
  • Emotional Recognition: AI tools capable of recognizing and responding to facial expressions and understanding emotional development.
  • AI Screener: Could AI learn about language development enough to provide a screener for language impairments? Maybe this screener will help with early identification of potential speech disabilities and help therapists working in Early Intervention.

Wouldn’t these be amazing additions to our toolboxes?

Conclusion

AI can significantly enhance speech therapy by providing diagnostic assistance, personalized therapy plans, interactive exercises, and real-time feedback.

However, AI should complement the expertise of the SLP rather than replace it.

By combining the strengths of AI with the expertise and care of professional therapists, we can improve outcomes for students with speech and language disorders more efficiently!
